Sutton Community Information

Sutton is located in Worcester County, roughly halfway between Boston and Hartford, Conn. While the town itself is predominantly rural, the conveniences of an urban area are within an hourís drive. The main roadways in the region include Interstates 395 and 90, and State Route 146. Suttonís closest neighbors are Millbury, Auburn, East Douglas and Sunderland.

Sutton was founded in 1704 and incorporated 10 years later. The small village grew on the strength of farming and milling activities. While it has modernized somewhat, the town remains very much linked to its history. The town has designated two historic districts and has two colonial farms listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Plus, strong partnerships and an active local volunteer base support ongoing efforts to preserve Suttonís heritage.

One of Suttonís most recognized landmarks is the Purgatory Chasm State Reservation. The chasm, roughly one-quarter of a mile long and as deep as 70 feet, slices through walls of natural granite rock. It is thought to have been created about 14,000 years ago by a broken dam of glacial meltwater. Today, families enjoy the chasmís stunning scenery and the two miles of trails winding around the reservation.

Also notable is Waters Farm, a homestead dating back to 1757. Featuring a main house, cook barn, wagon shed, blacksmith shop and other outbuildings, Waters Farm offers a step-back-in-time experience that is both enjoyable and educational. The farm sprawls over 130 acres of lightly wooded rolling hills and boasts great views of Lake Manchaug.
